Wow what a day to be out on and in the water! We had a rather early and chilly start this morning, however the sunrise was a stunning sight and the conditions were fantastic with relatively flat seas and little to no wind. We headed towards the islands and were surprised and delighted to find that we could see the bottom of the bay! Once on anchor we had the area to ourselves for a while and our first shark arrived only 5 minutes later. This little juvenile White shark was a little on the shy side and kept its distance but thanks to the amazing clarity in the water today many of the passes were seen. This trip saw a great number of sharks, both male and female and a great range of sizes, some of the well-known sharks we were lucky enough to see include “Khaleesi” and “Tum K” and also a juvenile that Dyer Island Conservation Trust has acoustically tagged in the previous few months. Much excitement was heard around the boat about half way through our trip when a commotion was seen in the distance and turned out to be a successful White shark predation on a Cape Fur seal. Before finishing our amazing trip we headed through Shark Alley to have a closer look at the Cape Fur seals.

The second trip of the day launched with the same great conditions as the first. We had a wait of around 15 minutes before our first shark arrived. This first little juvenile was the only shark for close to half an hour before more started to arrive, the majority of which were under the 3.0m length so this afternoon’s trip was truly dominated by the juvenile White sharks. We had the same little acoustically tagged shark around yet again and a very small but playful individual that launched itself out of the water at the seal decoy with both shark and decoy clearing the waters’ surface. We also had another visitor around the boat this afternoon in the shape of a Short-tailed stingray. Whilst this stingray didn’t come right to the surface, the clear waters allowed a nice view of the animal gliding in the depths. To finish our trip and day we made a stop by Geyser Rock and the Cape Fur seals before heading back to land.

It’s hard to picture a nicer day out on the water, beautiful conditions and FIN-tastic sharks!
