Whale and Dolphin Studies
Whale and Dolphin Studies
Our marine biologists and guides collect observational data whilst onboard the vessels of our partner company, Dyer Island Cruises. All sightings are mapped and we take readings of water temperature, pressure, and oxygen levels.
We have three whale species that can be seen in the area – the southern right whale (mid-June to mid-November), the humpback whale (June to August), and our more resident Bryde’s whales. We have three dolphin species – Indo-pacific bottlenose, common dolphin, and our endangered humpback dolphins.
Our team extensively studied the endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphin in Kleinbaai, South Africa,as part of the SouSA project, aiming to assess the population status along the South African coast.
We have actively supported studies over the years on southern right whales from collecting whale faeces to understand feeding habits, supporting the annual aerial survey team, and supporting PhD studies of cetaceans in the Dyer Island ecosystem. View full list of publications on www.dict.org.za.
