A stunning sunrise began our day perfectly and we knew it was going to be a great day. Before I could even finish the briefing, one of our volunteers, D.C., spotted a shark approaching the boat. We quickly got everyone suited up and into the water to see this beauty! She was a 2.8 meter female with a large scar across her right side and a very dark round scar below that. She was very mellow and cruised back and forth in front of the cage and around the boat. It didn’t take long before she was accompanied by a 3.1 meter male with lots of scars around his face, on his dorsal fin, and on his dorsal side just between the eyes and dorsal fin. He was also a very mellow shark and cruised by, occasionally trying to get the decoy. Most of the other sharks this trip were also very laid back and chilled out. Some would randomly decide to go for the decoy or bait line while others wouldn’t go for them at all. These sharks would just swim by slowly and look each diver in the eye. Our second trip had to wait a bit longer before a shark was spotted. The first shark from the first trip returned. Not long after her arrival a 2.1 meter shark and a 2.5 meter shark came by to inspect the area. They hung around with us for quite a bit. Our third trip of the day was just as lucky as the first with no wait time before a shark was spotted. In fact, two sharks were spotted! One shark was 2.8 meters long while the other was 2.2 meters long. They hung around for about an hour before disappearing. We quickly figured out why. A very girth 4.0 meter shark was approaching the boat from below. She had probably been circling the area for a while, seeing what was going on today in the bay, and decided to come inspect our seal decoy to see if it was worthy of her even attempting to go for it. She only hung around for a short while before she decided she wasn’t interested in a wooden seal decoy. Our last shark was a feisty 2.4 meter pale shark. It was very energetic and continued back and forth between the bait line and seal decoy! Another great day with amazing anaimsl!
