Conditions: A warm day with a few clouds in the sky with the wind picking up a bit throughout the day.

As soon as we left the harbour this beautiful morning, we passed two Southern Right Whales sunbathing in the warm morning sun. We arrived at our dive site at The Shallows, where we quickly put the cage in the water. Our guests jumped into their wetsuits and entered the cage at the first sight of a shark. We didn’t hear any squeals from our divers as they jumped into the cage, as the water temperature was nice and warm. Our guests were thrilled as the copper sharks moved close to the cage showing everyone where they get their name from – their beautiful copper-like colouration. The sharks were nice and active, and once our guests headed home, they left with some wonderful new experiences.

On trip 2, the wind started to pick up a little, as did the temperature of the water. We set out and made our way to the dive site where we got to see the coppers surface almost as soon as we arrived. This prompted us to start getting our divers into the cage , with the sharks hanging around in front, checking out our operation. We got to see varying sizes around the cage today, from a 1m animal to some larger specimens, most of which were all female. Although a little murky, our divers made the best of their time in the cage, with some sharks giving them some up close and personal views. We also got to see a Cape Fur Seal at the front of the boat briefly, but we were so entranced by the sharks that we didn’t pay too much attention to this playful pinniped.

Trip 3 also had a fantastic time on the water, although our sightings did slow down a little towards the end of the tour. The Copper Sharks were cooking and we were treated to the sight of these wonderful animals displaying their lively nature. These animals are inherently curious which is fantastic for all those who venture into the cage, hoping to catch a view of these fish eating predators under the water. On this trip, we also got to see a smaller shark with a tag on its dorsal fin. It is so great to see science in action out on the boats, and we’re hopeful that the tag will provide greater insight into the movement patterns of these impressive creatures. Earlier on in the day, we also got to see the Copper Shark without the dorsal fin. Once all of our divers had seen a shark or two, we picked up our anchor and slowly cruised back to port.
