‘Great experience, sharks were awesome!’

16/11/2015

Location: The Shallows
Water Temperature: 18.5

Depth: 11 m

Visibility: 0.5m

Number of Sharks: First Trip (6 white Sharks, 1 Short –tailed stingray) – Second Trip (2 white Sharks) – Third Trip (2 white sharks, 3 Bronze whaler sharks)

Conditions: Blue skies, little bit of swell with the wind picking up throughout the day (12-15 kts)

On the early bird trip this morning we were lucky enough to see 6 white sharks around our cage after a short wait. The largest of the 6 was approximately 3.3 m in length, but the sex could not be identified accurately due to the small size of the claspers of male sharks at this immature size. The boat was also visited by to aerial guests in the form of 2 giant petrol’s.  The second trip saw another two white sharks, one with a distinct scratch on her left eye, however her vision seemed fine as she approached the decoy from both left and right sides.

Our third trip was quite unusual, as we were honoured to share the water with 3 Bronze whaler sharks (copper sharks). Although usually seen feeding towards the bottom of the water column on cephalopods, rays and bony fish species, or at bait balls, these inquisitive creatures have been seen on rare occasions approaching our bait line. They hung round for the majority of our trip and demonstrate the biodiversity these waters in this region offer. We also saw 4 white sharks, seemingly co – inhabiting the waters around our bait with little concern for each others presence. What an amazing day on the big blue!
