Location:  Wilfred’s rock
Water Temperature: 15.9C
Depth: 23.3
Visibility: 4m
Number of Sharks: 9
Conditions:  Some swell out at sea with a mixture of sun and clouds

A late trip today as we launched at 13:00, this had to do with the swell and wind that were present in the morning. All the people joining us on the boat were informed of the conditions prior to booking as there was quite bit of swell. This did however not keep the people from coming and everyone seemed to enjoy the ride towards shark alley. As we made our way around Dyer Island we already spotted quite a few different species of birds. Shortly after we got on anchor and an albatross appeared gliding just above the surface level of the water. It was a beautiful sight as they are gliding without flapping their wings. Other birds we spotted were Shearwaters, Gannets, White-chinned petrels, a Giant petrel, Hartlaub’s gulls, Kelp gulls and Terns. Local fishermen seem to be finding a lot of fish around the islands so perhaps the birds are attracted by this abundance of fish. The sharks were around in abundance as well as we spotted 9 different sharks during the trip. We started off with three sharks. The biggest of the three was 4.3m female that stuck around for most of the time. About 30 minutes after the first three sharks showed up, a 3.5m shark with a propeller injury in front of the caudal fin showed up. Fortunately the sharks are very good at regenerating tissue so hopefully this shark will come back the next few weeks so we can monitor the well being and healing process. Another 5 sharks showed up shortly after and we ended up seeing 9 different sharks varying from 2.5m to 4.3m in length.
