Conditions: Cloudy in the morning with a little wind which picked up in the afternoon, but the sun broke through later.
The first tour of today set out bright and early, launching just after 8 and making a B-line for The Shallows where we hoped we would find some sharks. On the way in, we spotted some Southern Right Whales in the distance before dropping our anchor just off the coast. Our first visitor today was none other than Tubby, a friendly Cape Fur Seal pup who likes to hunt along the reefs below the boat. Tubby wasted no time scoring himself a meal in the form of a Puffadder Shyshark which he ate behind the boat. After a bit of a wait, the Bronze Whalers popped up to say hi and we were treated to a lovely dive. There were many close encounters with these gorgeous coppery creatures, who were super active in front of the cage. The Copper Sharks spend the next couple of hours moving in and out of the area, coming in and then letting another take its place as they plunged to the depths below. We were lucky to have some big beauties around, and thoroughly enjoyed watching them as they came up to investigate us. We also had one poor shark who looked like he’d had an unfortunate encounter with a fisherman, with the fishing line still trailing on his dorsal fin. After a great few hours on anchor, we made our way back to Kleinbaai harbour, getting a great look at a mother whale who showed off her tail as we travelled by. On Today’s tour, we also had Georgia celebrating her 31st birthday, so once we were back in, we sang happy birthday before saying our final goodbyes.
The wind picked up on our second trip, making for a bumpy ride. Once we arrived at the dive site and the cage was positioned next to the boat, our divers got into their wetsuits. It wasn’t long before the first copper sharks popped up and our divers quickly jumped into the cage to see them up close. Soon the 2.5 meter female white shark that has been hanging around in the area arrived and gave the divers in the cage a good show. As the wind picked up, things got bumpier, but luckily the copper sharks were active enough to keep our divers entertained. We soon headed back to shore, where hot soup and bread was being served. And for those who were seeing green there was cold ginger ale waiting for them.
