Conditions: A misty start, clearing to beautiful sun, slight swell and wind
This morning’s trip had us venturing into the eerie mist! As we waded through to our anchor site the morning sun soon started to burn through, and it cleared up to be a beautiful morning. After anchoring we only had to wait 10 minutes for our first white shark! Sarko was back with plenty of energy this morning and our divers needed to be on their toes to catch her! She stuck around for about 15 minutes, before two of our copper sharks showed up and had some fun around the cage! As the morning wore on, Sarko appeared from nowhere and gave us a second round of fantastic photo opportunities! But this wasn’t all for today, not only did a cheeky seal come and have a play around the cage, but in the distance we saw fins approaching. The regular surfacing of these fins indicated that they didn’t belong to sharks, but instead as they got closer to Slashfin, they turned out to be a pod of 5 Humpback Dolphins! It was a great experience to witness these awesome cetaceans!
For our second trip our bronze friends were the first to join us around the cage, and the excitement increased 10 fold when a White shark appeared. This was a small female we have seen recently but not frequently, easily identified by the scratches around her head and gills. She didn’t stick around long but whilst she was gone the Bronze Whalers or Copper sharks kept us busy. The second shark for the trip appeared soon after, a very small juvenile, estimated under 2m in length, which is generally the smallest we see in this area. This shark was a new animal for us to document since the sharks have reappeared back in the bay, it appeared a little skittish but also very enthusiastic and curious to have a closer look at the happenings around the boat. The third and final White shark for the trip was Sarko, one of the bays most frequent visitors, she came rocketing in, made a ruckus and disappeared into the depths. A beautiful afternoon out on the water.
It appeared that the Humpback dolphins from the first trip had stuck around in the shallows this afternoon as we spotted them in the distance from Slashfin.
An action packed day with wildlife out there today! Another remarkable day in the bay!
